Directorate Biosecurity provides strategic leadership and overall management of the implementation of biosecurity measures aimed at preventing the entry of invasive species into the country as well as their establishment and spread to protect South Africa's economy, biodiversity and human health. 

The Directorate administers National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEMBA, 2004) and its alien and invasive species Regulations which regulates the importation and all activities involving invasive and alien species through the issuance of relevant permits.
